We had the pleasure to host the 2nd edition of the RSC-Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry Group Early Career Researchers meeting in Manchester on 27 July. The event was a great success with more than 100 participants, 36 posters, 15 talks, and 1 plenary lecture by Prof. Tony Davis.
Many congrats to Rob for winning the presentation prize at the CheM62 meeting in Liverpool. CheM62 is a networking group of chemistry departments and industries linked by the M62 motorway. Rob presented in research of mechanocatalysts.
Richard went to Bolton School, with fellow CDT students, to talk about graphene and mechanochemistry. Read Richard's account below. Whilst attending an outreach event in the National Graphene Institute (NGI) in April, I got talking to a member of staff at Bolton School and by maintaining links I organised an outreach day in the chemistry department at the school. Along with Michael and Kelly (fellow Graphene NOWNANO CDT students) we presented a day of talks, interactive demonstrations and practical experiments.
We started by taking two Y12 chemistry classes and delivering short talks covering our university experiences from undergraduate through to current PhD life. This included an overview of our current research and Masters’ projects to give the students a flavour of the different areas of chemistry out there. Additionally it enabled them to understand that your Masters’ research does not necessarily have to dictate your PhD research projects. This led on to an engaging Q&A session covering everything from the commercial potential of graphene to how to decide which halls to apply to at a university! Michael and Kelly then took a Y8 class through two exciting activities: the class was split into two groups which rotated between a mechanical exfoliation of graphene practical, allowing students to prepare their own single layer graphene flakes and view them under an optical microscope, and an interactive talk about graphene and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using a specially designed TEM tablet app helping the students to understand the length scale of the work we undertake. Meanwhile, I took three high achieving Y12 students and ran a university admissions workshop, advising on everything from personal statements and interview tips to academic workload and university life. Finally, we split a Y10 class into three groups and took them through a circuit of three activities. Each group had the opportunity to (i) mechanically exfoliate their own graphene flakes; (ii) hear a talk about our backgrounds as PhD researchers and how we got to where we are today and (iii) participate in an interactive talk about nanomaterials and graphene, complete with a host of videos of commercial examples of ‘smart’ materials. In each activity the students were well engaged and encouraged to ask as many questions as they could which led to some thoroughly enjoyable discussions! Overall the day was a great success and was enjoyed by ourselves and the students alike! Our thanks go to Bolton School for hosting and allowing the opportunity to turn young students towards the sciences. Richard Stevenson Many congrats to Richard for winning the poster prize at the postgraduate conference of the School of Chemistry. Richard presented his research on controlling the mechanical reactivity of Diels-Alder adducts.
We had the great pleasure to host Rint in Manchester on Tuesday 29th of May. Rint gave an amazing talk on Molecular scale probing of mechanical damage in polymeric materials’. We're looking forward to his next visit! The inevitable Periodic pic! At Christie's with Dr Alex Pulis
MChem students Sam and Lewis, and Erasmus students Simon and Sharon have now finished their projects and left the lab. We wish them the best of luck for the upcoming exam period and all their future projects.
Sharon and Simon join us from the University of Louvain (Guillaume's Alma Mater) for a 3-month Erasmus placement. Welcome to both!
We are please to welcome our first postdocs: Dr Rafael Sandoval Torrientes and Dr Min Zhang. Min is joining us from Shanghai as a Newton International Fellow and Rafa is coming from Madrid to work on a Wellcome Trust funded project. Welcome to both!
Our recent JACS paper has been highlighted in Science Editors' Choice (Science 2017, 358, 1267-1268)
